After Brian Shiozawa accepted an appointment to serve as regional director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in December, local GOP delegates gathered at City Hall on Jan. 9 to select his replacement for his seat in the Utah Senate.

Several candidates made their case to serve as Senate District 8’s representative, and in the end, Dr. Brian Zehnder was chosen during a special election meeting on January 9. Following the election, he was appointed to office by Gov. Gary Herbert.

Zehnder was born and raised in Michigan, and after finishing medical school in 1989, he came to Utah for his residency at the University of Utah Medical Center and has stayed ever since.

Zehnder lives in Holladay with his wife and three children, and admits he has “big shoes to fill” in replacing Shiozawa.
